We're not giving up, though. New bees will be arriving this spring!

That doesn’t look like winter kill to me. Extended cold usually results in the bees starving to death because they cant break cluster to reach food. That usually looks like a cluster of bees with their head and body inside the cells, and honey just an inch or two away. There will be some bees on the bottom board, but not like this. I’d be looking into other causes if you don’t see what I described. Things like mites or pesticides.

Do you keep your screened bottom all year? This far north, it should be closed.

I was keeping my fingers crossed but afraid the weeks of bitter cold were too much for them. 🙁
